Ebersol Is Haunted by a Day in November
In a moment of triumph like so many others in a career defined by deal-making and producing, Dick Ebersol could not escape his sadness. It was April 16, and memories of the jet crash last Thanksgiving weekend that killed his year-old son, Teddy; left him bedridden for nearly 10 weeks; and injured his oldest son, Charlie, were still fresh. He and other NBC officials had held informal discussions last summer, and he had spoken to two league officials within days of the crash. He had restarted the talks from the bed at his home in Litchfield, Conn. How could I feel so good?
After a brief departure, he returned to SNL in as executive producer and remained until , spanning the Eddie Murphy and Billy Crystal eras. In , he secured the rights to the Atlanta Summer Olympics. It marked the first time that rights for consecutive Olympics were awarded at the same time. Later that same year, he spearheaded NBC Sports' acquisition of the exclusive media rights for the and Summer Olympics , and the Winter Olympics. The agreements marked the first time that the same network had been awarded the rights to five consecutive Olympics.
